HONEYCOMB HOUSING PROTOTYPE
This mass timber multi-unit residential building addresses the affordable housing scarcity in North American cities and the environmental impacts of construction. Located in Austin, Texas, Honeycomb Housing was developed in collaboration with Game Creek Holdings, and conceived as a prototype product constructed using a prefabricated kit of parts.
Each aspect of the construction process focuses on prioritizing healthier building practices. By using mass timber panels for structural components, this project is multilaterally reducing its overall carbon emissions. Much of the building’s structure, cladding, and interiors are prefabricated offsite, then shipped and assembled quickly, efficiently, and quietly.
As a prototype project, Honeycomb is slated to be adapted and built throughout the United States on leftover infill and edge sites that are typically considered unsuitable by developers. Instead of replacing existing city fabric, developing these types of sites adds to what is already there and strengthens the fabric of the community.
