South Britannia brings Canada’s first full-size Wavegarden surf park to Britannia Beach on Howe Sound. MGA is designing the 2,800 sq. m Hub building and the shoreline of the 7-acre lagoon.
Process
The Hub building houses a surf academy, café, bar, restaurant and retail, and opens onto a 7,500 sqf. outdoor deck facing the water. The lagoon has a dissipative shoreline, which absorbs wave energy instead of reflecting it back into the water.
The site is a former gravel quarry, worked from the 1950s to the 1990s. The development remediates the land and reconnects Gravel Creek to Thistle Creek and Howe Sound, with a net gain in aquatic and riparian habitat. For MGA, the project is stewardship at site scale returning a worked-out quarry to public use and healthier habitat.
